Ceremony marks 20 years of Hanoi receiving 'City for Peace' title

20 years ago, Hanoi was honored by UNESCO with the title during a ceremony held in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. Hanoi remains the only capital in the Asia-Pacific region being conferred the recognition.

A street carnival with the participation of nearly 100 domestic and foreign artists was held around Hoan Kiem walking street on July 14, part of cultural activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hanoi's recognition as a “City for Peace” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Domestic and foreign artists joined a parade around the pedestrian streets around Hoan Kiem lake and stopped at Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square and Hang Khay – Hang Bai intersection. The carnival included dances and circus performances as well as a showcase of  Hanoi’s traditional foods.

On July 13, Hanoi's leaders and representatives from diplomatic missions and international organizations joined a walk for peace and a street festival with the participation of more than 10,000 artists and people.

On the same day, Hanoi also organized a ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the capital city's ‘City for Peace’ title.

An inauguration of a website with theme “Hanoi – Creative City” and the release of pigeons, representing Hanoians’ aspiration for peace were also held on this occasion, Hanoi's leaders and UNESCO representatives inaugurated the website with theme “Hanoi – Creative City”.

In 1999, Hanoi was honored by the UNESCO with the title during a ceremony held in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. The city remains the only capital in the Asia-Pacific region to receive the recognition.
