Mekong Delta - Famous Place For Floating Markets In Vietnam

Nga Do
One of the most popular destinations in Vietnam is the Mekong Delta. There are many floating markets there, but today we are going to speak about Cai Rang Floating Market.

This market is busy from the early morning (around 3 AM) to late afternoon. Located on Cai Rang River, this floating market is 6 km away from the center of Can Tho City (the capital of the Mekong Delta). Playing as one of the main trading centers of the Mekong Delta, Cai Rang is a place where the locals sell and buy a wide range of products catering to their daily lives.

You can find there the freshest fruits harvested from the farms, durian, rambutan, mangosteen, grapefruit, etc., or even other processed specialties, such as fish sauce, coconut candy or dried fishes.

When coming to the floating market, make sure that you experience so-called floating restaurants. Because the trading starts early in the morning, there are many boats serve the breakfast for both sellersand shoppers. Here, you can find most local dishes, such as famous pho, hu tieu, com tam, bun rieu, etc. With only 25.000 VND (~1 USD), you can have an amazing and mouth-watering meal and even a cup of coffee. Most of the locals have been living with their “floating stall” for about 30 – 40 years, so they know a thing or two about their business and you will surely get a tasty experience.

Wallowing in the hectic atmosphere, you not only see the bustling vibe of the market, but also enhance your knowledge of how several generations live together on boats. Those boats become their "mobile houses" on the river, which contain animals, flower pots, TV, and more. Needless to say, all daily activities mostly take place on boats. On the late afternoon, children can study on deck while parents may prepare something to sell tomorrow.

In the busy floating market, there is no need for the sellers to shout the name of the product they sell. That’s because it will get lost in the noise of the boats’ engines. Instead, they choose the long pole as the way to advertise their products. The samples of what they sell will be hung on the long upright pole in every boat, so that visitors and buyers can easily notice their goods from the distance.

Traveling to Vietnam, in addition to prominent destinations such as Halong & Sapa in the north, visiting the floating market is an unforgettable experience in southern Vietnam. Visiting a floating market in the Mekong delta is one of the highlights in this region. This will be one of the best experiences you've ever had.
